Jabiru Community College is an alternative senior school in Brisbane that welcomes young people who thrive in a more flexible learning environment. Under the careful guidance of two new co-principals, Jabiru reached out to us to completely transform their brand strategy, identity, website and marketing materials. 

With a highly diverse student cohort and a vibrant, architecturally designed campus, the leap over the rainbow was a logical one. Through sensitive stakeholder interviews, SEO strategy and competitor research, we developed a brand positioning, creative direction and visual universe that is as daringly different as the schooling at Jabiru.

There’s a reason that ‘School Sux’ is scrawled on notebooks all over the world.

The traditional, mass produced approach to schooling is designed to make teaching more efficient. Not to make learning more enjoyable.

For many young people, the traditional system feels rigid, impersonal, oppressive and overwhelming. In a world based on bell curves, those who think, learn or experience things differently can start to feel like they’re the problem. A square peg in a round hole.

At Jabiru Community College, there are no pegs. And there are no holes. We celebrate the diversity that makes each of us unique. We want you to feel safe, seen and heard.

With youth workers, social workers and educators working side-by-side, personalised support is a staple, not a side note.

Your individuality sits at the core of our Big Picture Learning Design. We take the time to understand your interests, challenges, strengths and ambitions – and co-create a learning journey that’s yours alone.

We know that people perform best when they love that they do. When they can pursue their passions as a pathway to learning, and have genuine agency over how that journey is constructed. 

So we made a place that does just that. This is school created around you.

As our research process revealed, Brisbane is home to many iconic private school brands, many of which employ the same formula of tidy campus photography, aspirational student achievements and a corporate, traditional colour palette. Contrasted with Jabiru’s non-negotiable values of individuality and diversity, it was clear that we needed to carve an entirely new path. 

Jabiru was already ahead of the local market, being the city’s only school to offer Big Picture (BP) Learning, an educational model developed in New York. BP schools start with the student, building individual learning plans around their interests. Our task was to bring this differentiator to the forefront in a way that would appeal to students, staff and caregivers. 

Our first round of strategic interviews was with the stakeholders with the most influence at Jabiru: the students. There, we learned of the significance that colour, symbol and language held in their identities, and how essential it would be to create a brand that everyone could adopt.

Based on the insight that Jabiru puts the student at the centre, rather than expecting them to contort themselves into a standard mould, we developed the positioning “school created around you” and produced custom portraits of real students, surrounded by their interests. 

We paired powerful, authentic photography and video content with bold typography and handmade elements to create an imperfectly human, optimistic feeling.  The Jabiru brand provides a heartfelt and original platform for a school we all wish we went to.
